2022 Energy Conference:Net Zero Emissions and Energy Policy

Last year, the United Nations Climate Conference called for the global acceleration of carbon reduction and net zero carbon dioxide emissions before 2050. For this reason, the Executive Yuan released in March Taiwan’s roadmap to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. However, observers find the government’s plan to be a fantasy because it excludes nuclear power when developments in renewable energy are seriously behind, while hydrogen energy and carbon capture technology remain nascent.

Taiwan has experienced five major blackouts in the past five years, including several outages this year. The fragile power grid and energy shortage have not only contributed to an unstable power supply but also deeply affected economic development, highlighting the dilemma of the incumbent administration’s energy policy.

Considering these challenges, the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation and Fair Winds Foundation will hold a conference on “Net Zero Emissions and Energy Policy” featuring scholars and experts to discuss Taiwan’s road to net zero emissions and current energy policy. It is hoped that the conference will help civil society propose more reasonable energy policies.
